Breath: Body, Mind, Heart.
Breath, body and mind - we are all experiencing each of these, every moment of our lives.
Or are we?
Today, many people are realizing the powerful disconnect from both their bodies and their breath, the lack of feeling present to and for life as it is happening. Not only that, but many feel a resistance to getting closer to them.
Cell phones, jobs, responsibility overload, social media, distractibility, irritability...
While the reasons for this may vary from person to person, one thing is certain:
More and more of us are realizing that our modern way of life can easily strip us of presence and embodiment and enjoyment for life as it is happening, and leave us stuck in the world of the mind.
Fortunately, the door is only locked from the inside! One key to recovering our vivid experience of life is immediately available all the time -- the breath. It can open the door to life.
This is the inspiration and intention behind Henry and Luke’s three-module intensive Breath: Body, Mind, Heart.
In roughly 6 hours over three days total, this packed and exciting workshop will examine the intersection of breath practice, body practice and Zen’s insights into the heart and mind. We will explore conscious breathing patterns, subtle body and somatic movements, interspersed with breath awareness, and deepen significantly in our meditation practice.
Each of these practices and the perspectives we investigate in this powerful weekend experience will lead to a greater presence, as we connect us to breath, body, mind and heart in beautiful ways....benefits:
Effectively address stress, soothe anxiety and lessen depression
Energize your body and shift from lethargy and low energy
Enhance a positive mindset and see the silver linings and basic goodness
Find groundedness and connection to the present moment in any circumstances
Sharpen your decision making, executive functioning and discernment
Find greater attunement to the natural and man-made world all around you
Develop a trusting relationship to presence through breath
Learn how to deal with strong emotions in a potent and immediate manner
Open up the heart and let in more self-love
Transform and heal difficult emotions and trauma
Be more present, alive and appreciative in every moment
Relax your mind and body
Lessen feelings of worry, regret, anger and irritation
Quickly notice when thoughts and emotions take you away from the present and learn how to bring yourself back to the here and now
Session 1: MIND and BREATH - Friday, 12/17, 6-730pm mst.
Investigative understanding of how breath influences the mind.
Session 1 will investigate why & how our breathing behaves as it does from moment to moment, and how this is tied into the default mode network (DMN) -- which is the cause of much of our worrying, our tendency to find the negative in everything around us, as well as common struggles with beginning a meditation practice.
This session will explain and instruct several conscious and connected breathing pattern practices, leading participants to directly experience how awareness of breath in conscious breath practice lends to a greater body awareness, positively affects a loosening from the DMN’s cycle of negativity and worry, and enhances ease in developing and deepening into sitting meditation.
Session 2: BODY, BREATH and MIND - Saturday, 12/18, 9-11am mst.
Investigative understanding of breath as intentional movement and in motion.
Session 2 will explore fundamental aspects & basic principles of breath, illuminating the intricate nature of how breath can positively affect our bodies and in turn our minds.
This session will address breath as a behavior and will investigate ‘seasons’ of the breath through direct practice, guiding participants in establishing a new, conscious relationship to their breath.
This session will utilize a combination of basic Qigong movements & beginner yoga postures embedded with conscious breath as a means of priming the body (specifically, the core muscles used in breathing as well as spinal health and awareness) for a healthy sitting posture, which benefits one’s sitting meditation practice.
Session 3: BREATH and the HEART - Sunday, 12/19, 9-11am mst with extended q&a time.
Investigating breath and emotion - loving awareness - boundless heart - in and as awareness: The Conscious Practice of Allowing, In Sitting + Life Context.
Session 3 will investigate the “auto-pilot” side of breath practice in the context of meditation, as a means of anchoring into present moment experience, as presence itself deepens, at home in the body.
It’s critical to open and allow our heart experience - to learn ways of tending the atmosphere of our heart area, developing a kind relationship with our feelings and emotions, and learning to allow them and grow through them, rather than seeking to avoid them.
Conscious breathing practices can help with this, and set us up for deeper more heartfelt meditation -- which can be a deeply rich and transformative experience. From the tenderness we discover we can bring to the personal heart, we begin to touch into the “great heart” that Zen points to, opening the way to a transformative awakening of the heart.
*all sessions will include guided breathing instruction, guided light movement, & guided sitting meditation instruction
*all sessions will conclude with an open q&a+group sharing opportunity for participants
*course dates & times:
Friday, December 17 to Sunday, December 19, 2021, online.
